NOVA SCOTIA - 1992

SOUTH TO YARMOUTH
August 20th proved to be a bright, sunny day as we began our drive southward from Truro. On the highway past Milford, there was a loud "BANG" and it proved to be that our right front tire was completely demolished. We replaced it with the spare from the trunk and carefully repacked everything. There was an Irving Gas Station at Nine Mile River, where the tire was replaced and balanced for $114.19 while we were treated to a couple of free coffees and a couple of 50% discount tickets on passenger fares . . . which we could use on Friday when we took the Bluenose Ferry from Yarmouth to Bar Harbor (US spelling). [You may continue to use the map of our trip East for our drive southward to Yarmouth. Viewers may also click on the map of Canada to follow our trip in Nova Scotia.]
Our next stop was much more enjoyable. A short side trip took us to the site of Port Royal, Samuel de Champlain's fort where he established the "Order of Good Times". You may take a look at both Pat's Membership Certificate and Doug's Membership Certificate in the order.

We were anticipating our first seafood feast of the famous Digby scallops all the way to our next destination. Our meal of sautéed scallops at the Captain's Table Restaurant in Digby came to $36.90. It was a huge disappointment!

On Thursday evening, we arrived at the Journey's End Motel in Yarmouth and felt fortunate that four of the five met the standards advertized by "The Management". After breakfast on Friday, August 21, we found time to do part of the walking tour including many historic buildings. The relationship of the town to the harbour may be seen in another map of Yarmouth. That's where we were when the Bluenose Ferry arrived promptly at 3:00 PM.

We parked the car in the hold of the ship and made our way up to the main deck, where we were met by the ship's photographer. We were handed a page with a list of onboard activities and made ourselves comfortable for the trip to Bar Harbor, Maine.
